Presidential elections are to be held here in Peru this coming Sunday.  All citizens must return to their home town or village to vote or incur a fine.  The fine ranges from S/75 to S/28 depending upon the location; the higher fine is for those in urban areas, and the lower fine is for the most rural of residents.  Campaigning has been going on for well over a year, but it is really ramping up in the last couple of weeks.  Many homes and businesses have covered the exterior walls with various candidates names, slogans, and afiliates running for congress.  The sides of the drainage ditches, walls along the sidewalk and most other available surfaces are also painted with campaign signs.  Vehicles of all kinds are roaming the streets with loud speakers mounted atop blaring speeches and slogans.

  1. So interesting to hear about the elections. Do you have any feelings about any of the candidates? Are there extreme right and left candidates? Interesting that they have to return to their own towns with this being the computer age. Keep us posted. Yes you will miss Juana and Sanchez….what’s on the menu for the next 10 days? You’ll have fun, but be glad to see them, I know

Haven’t seen anything arrive yet for your Molalla home. Hope that all goes smooth and is able to close for you soon.
